On this day, February 13, 2026, the Department of Education (DepEd) released a major policy that places the mental health and overall well‑being of its workforce at the center of its priorities. Through DepEd Order No. 02 s. 2026 or the Guidelines for the Wellness Leave (WL), the department formally adopts and implements the 5-day Wellness Leave mandated by the Civil Service Commission (CSC MC No. 01, s. 2026). This DepEd Order finally ends the misleading information that many teachers receive from their co-workers and even from their own superiors, amid rumors that teachers are excluded from this kind of leave.
This policy marks a significant cultural shift in the education sector—recognizing that teachers and education personnel cannot pour from an empty cup. The mental, emotional, and physical wellness of the people who keep schools running is essential to meaningful learning.
What is Wellness Leave?
Wellness Leave (WL) is one of DepEd’s most progressive benefits, granting five (5) days of leave annually for eligible personnel. It is distinct from Vacation Leave (VL) and Sick Leave (SL) because its purpose extends beyond illness or fatigue. The Department of Education designed Wellness Leave to support and protect the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of its personnel.
According to the DepEd Order, employees may use Wellness Leave “for purposes including, but not limited to, mental health care, physical wellness activities, or a general break from work.” This distinction matters because Wellness Leave focuses on prevention and self-care, not just on recovery like Sick Leave. Based on the DepEd Order, this leave is preventive and proactive. It encourages employees to take care of themselves before stress spirals into burnout or mental health crises.
How Wellness Leave Works: Everything You Need to Know
Wellness Leave of DepEd employees may be used for up to 5 days per year, with each use renewing annually. However, this leave does not accumulate and cannot be cashed out. If employees do not use it within the year, they forfeit it. For this reason, workers should plan their Wellness Leave carefully to maximize its benefits.
The policy also allows flexible use of Wellness Leave to fit different needs. Employees may take up to three consecutive days for a full break or use the leave on non-consecutive days for shorter periods of rest. This setup helps workers manage stress without disrupting their work responsibilities. In addition, agencies protect the privacy of employees who apply for Wellness Leave. All information related to mental health remains confidential under the Data Privacy Act of 2012, which encourages employees to seek support without fear of stigma or judgment.
To use Wellness Leave properly, employees must follow the required filing process. They should file their application at least five days before the intended leave. In emergencies such as bereavement, sudden mental distress, or natural calamities, employees may submit their application immediately upon returning to work. Applicants must use CSC Form No. 6 and select “Others – Wellness Leave” until the Civil Service Commission releases an updated form. By following these guidelines, employees can ensure a smooth and stress-free application process.
