Senate “OKs” to postpone Barangay and SK ElectionsDEPED NEWS BLOG

Metro Manila (September 27) – A bill to put off the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled to this December was adopted by the Senate on its third and final reading.
In the Senate’s plenary meeting on Tuesday, 17 senators voted in support of the resolution that postpone and moves the Barangay and SK Elections to December 2023.

Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel and Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros were the only politicians to vote against the measure. Democracy is expensive, but the Filipino people should be prepared to pay this price, according to Pimentel.

“Magastos talaga ang demokrasya (Democracy is expensive), but this is a price the Filipinos should be willing to pay,” Pimentel said.

The proposed law also delays the next barangay and SK elections after the December 2023 polls until 2026 and then every three years after that. The bill’s counterpart was approved last week by the House of Representatives.

Earlier, the Commission on Elections stated that it was prepared to hold the elections this year but cautioned that additional funding might be required.

Update in Barangay Elections 2022

For aspirants in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) filing period has been set for October 6 through October 13, 2022, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Because October 9 falls on a Sunday, which is not included in the activity, the filing period will only last six days according to its Calendar of Activities. Candidates in the village and youth polls can submit their certificates of candidacy (OCs) at the OEO in their city or municipality.
