The process of item analysis examines students’ responses to certain test items (questions) in order to assess the reliability of those questions and the test as a whole. Item analysis can be used to eliminate questions that are unclear or misleading during a single test administration in addition to improving questions that will be asked repeatedly in subsequent exams. Item analysis also helps instructors improve their test-writing skills and identifies specific parts of the course material that need more attention or explanation.
