DepEd to look into 155 thousand Pesos Overpriced Camera Issue
Department of Education (DepEd) said that it would investigate claims that a particular model of digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera used by the agency was overvalued by more than five times its market value.
After the Senate blue ribbon committee suggested pressing charges against several current and former officials over the procurement of costly laptops, the finding of the purportedly overpriced camera calls into question the DepEd procurement procedure once more.

Jhun Dantes, a netizen, posted a photo of the camera on his Facebook page, identifying it as a Canon EOS 1500D and stating that it cost P155,929 to purchase, according to its acquisition cost. However, according to advertisements on internet purchasing websites, a Canon 1500D set with a kit lens only costs P30,000. DepEd spokesman Michael Wesley Poa declined to comment on the social media post when questioned about it and claimed that they needed to look into it first before doing so.
“I wanted to look into it, but the person who posted that insinuation has deleted the post. I will have to look into this further before I comment,” DepEd Spokesman Michael Poa.
Poa reaffirmed that the department is taking steps to “strengthen” its procurement processes and said that it will consider the findings of blue-ribbon committee. “As much as possible, we would like to procure these learning materials, for example, within DepEd, and when we do that, we will ensure that we have proper controls in place,” Poa added.
