Fewer subjects for Primary Education (Grade 1 to 3) – DEPED NEWS
“It’s very difficult for teachers to teach eight subjects in a day. It’s very difficult for students to absorb three languages and study eight subjects in a day,” Gatchalian said.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian wants fewer subjects for Grade 1 to 3 learners so they can have more time for English and Filipino language lessons. Gatchalian said students in Grades 1 to 3 currently have eight subjects in the curriculum, while English and Filipino subjects are only taught for 50 minutes each.
The senator explained that there are circumstances that some students find it difficult to concentrate on their studies because they need to help their parents earn money and some do not have electricity at night.
“So there are bottlenecks to learning. So, I do agree to lessen the subjects for Grades 1 to 3 and then increase the number of hours for English and Filipino,” Gatchalian added.
“A student will have more time to learn English, more time to read in English, more time to learn Filipino, but the student will not lose his identity or his comprehension using the mother tongue,” Senator Gatchalian said.

Perhaps the most pressing challenges the school faces are that of ensuring that all learners become competent readers. Learners who experienced problems in reading quickly fall behind their more skilled classmates in their ability to decode and comprehend text. The initiative is in response to the rapidly changing learning environment of present and future learners and will introduce aggressive reforms to globalize the quality of basic education in the Philippines.
