When pupils are exhibited or shown how to do something, they acquire new skills as opposed to learning the steps to execute a task, which is the case with procedural learning. In contrast to a series of instructions, which may not apply exactly in another context and are more likely to be overlooked, the advantage of conceptual learning over procedural learning is that once a concept is understood, it may be applied to real-life situations. Teachers must make clear to students that understanding the subject matter is more important than remembering a set of instructions or how to carry out a task.

Overview of Quarter 3 Competencies

This quarter’s lessons aim to strengthen learners’ core competencies across all subject areas through meaningful, hands-on learning. In English and Filipino, students explore different text types to improve comprehension, critical thinking, and communication. They learn to summarize ideas, express opinions, and create their own written works using appropriate language and structure. In Mathematics and Science, learners deepen their understanding of key concepts by applying logical reasoning and problem-solving skills to real-life situations. They investigate, experiment, and use analytical thinking to connect lessons with practical experiences and scientific inquiry.

Meanwhile, Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, TLE/EPP, and GMRC nurture the learners’ social awareness, creativity, practical life skills, and moral values. Students examine how history, culture, and community interactions shape today’s world, while engaging in artistic, physical, and health activities that promote well-being and self-expression. Through practical projects and reflective activities, they develop responsibility, respect, and collaboration. This lesson presentation introduces the quarter’s learning goals, guiding students toward holistic growth that integrates knowledge, skills, and values essential for lifelong learning and community engagement.

The main goal of the Department of Education (DepEd) in requiring teachers to have a lesson plan (free download available here) is effective learning. Lesson planning helps teachers set learning goals for students. It also helps teachers ensure that students achieve these goals. By planning lessons, teachers can ensure that daily classroom activities lead to student progress and achievement or the achievement of learning outcomes.
