When pupils are exhibited or shown how to do something, they acquire new skills as opposed to learning the steps to execute a task, which is the case with procedural learning. In contrast to a series of instructions, which may not apply exactly in another context and are more likely to be overlooked, the advantage of conceptual learning over procedural learning is that once a concept is understood, it may be applied to real-life situations. Teachers must make clear to students that understanding the subject matter is more important than remembering a set of instructions or how to carry out a task.

Overview of Quarter 3 Competencies

This quarter’s lessons focus on helping learners connect what they know with what they can do. In Mathematics and Science, students explore how numbers, patterns, and experiments work together to explain real-world situations. They analyze data, predict outcomes, and apply geometry and probability to solve problems. Through Science, they see how technology and engineering support discovery and innovation. English and Filipino lessons strengthen communication skills by encouraging learners to express ideas clearly, read critically, and write creatively in both languages. Therefore, each activity aims to build confidence in using language to understand and interact with the world.

Meanwhile, Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, EPP/TLE, and GMRC guide learners to become responsible and well-rounded individuals. Learners are expected to examine the country’s history, culture, and current issues while finding ways to take part in nation-building. In MAPEH, students express themselves through art, music, movement, and healthy habits. On the other hand, EPP/TLE lessons nurture practical and entrepreneurial skills that prepare them for everyday life and future work. Also, GMRC strengthens moral values, empathy, and respect, helping learners make thoughtful decisions for themselves and their communities. Together, these lessons create a balanced foundation that shapes learners to think critically, act responsibly, and live meaningfully.

The main goal of the Department of Education (DepEd) in requiring teachers to have a lesson plan (free download available here) is effective learning. Lesson planning helps teachers set learning goals for students. It also helps teachers ensure that students achieve these goals. Thus, teachers can ensure that daily classroom activities lead to student progress and achievement or the achievement of learning outcomes.
